Responsibilities of the Landowner For Operation and Maintenance of Windbreak/Shelterbelt* Prior to planting Assists in plan development, including long-term weed control. The year prior to planting, till the plot to kill existing sod and weeds. Spring, prior to planting, till plot as soon as possible, this encourages the weeds to germinate. Just prior to planter arriving on site work the plot again, till shallow using a cultivator or disk followed by harrowing operation to smooth the plot for a more uniform planting. Removed all obstacles such as rocks, tree branches, garbage, etc…
After planting All the trees should be straightened, soil packed around seedlings, and exposed roots must be covered with soil. NOTE: There should not be any soil on the green portion of the evergreens including the branches. Level the furrow created by tree planter, essential if fabric is to be installed. Before fabric is installed, area must be cultivated and kept clean between trees to insure proper installation of barrier. Trees must be checked regularly to ensure they will be ready for the weed barrier. It may be desirable to water trees after planting, later as needed. Check trees in late September to determine replacement needs. Handplant orders must be in no later than February 1.
If mechanical or chemical weed control is used: Keep the trees free from weed competition for a minimum of 3 years. Weeds rob soil moisture and nutrients causing trees to die or be stunted. CAUTION: To avoid damage to trees and roots, cultivate to a shallow depth and avoid getting too close.
If weed barrier fabric is used: Check the fabric several times a year for exposed edges. Ideal time to check would be following a major wind or rainstorm; all exposed edges should be secured immediately. Rocks or staples, not soil, are recommended to secure fabric between the trees. Soil encourages weed growth that roots through the fabric; also the soil may blow and /or wash away. Weeds that grow up around the tree through the slit provided will need to be pulled. Make sure fabric does not rub on base of tree. Annually cut fabric opening to accommodate tree growth as needed. Avoid tilling between fabric rows, damage to trees and/or fabric may result. Mow between fabric rows; use caution to avoid snagging loose or frayed fabric edges. Damage to trees and/or fabric may result. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This policy has been jointly reviewed in good faith as of: ____________________ (date)
